24 educationalists gathered to discuss and explore the philosophical foundations of their worlds, and their teaching and learning. To read what some of them said afterwards, click on "Sophie's World" at the top of the page.

Follow this link to more philosophical resources (it's a large Word document - so might take a while to open, and will appear in a new window)

The simple, but powerful concept of constructive alignment is gaining considerable momentum in higher education.  Its leading proponent is John Biggs (Biggs, 2003) who describes a strategic and integrated approach to all aspects of educational programmes.

Aims of the workshop:

To enable participants to understand and engage with an important development in educational thinking

To encourage participants to consider how constructive alignment can be applied in their own teaching and learning context

Objectives:

Through an experiential, interactive approach, participants will come to understand the theoretical models of constructive alignment, the reflective practitioner, and experiential learning

Participants will reflect on their current approach to teaching and learning in small group discussion & share experiences

Together, the facilitators and workshop participants will consider how the ideas of constructive alignment can be used to improve the effectiveness of medical education.

AIMS:

* To Explore the use of stories in teaching & learning
* To Learn through the experience of others

OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the session you will have:

* Experienced an interactive workshop sharing stories

* Discussed this mode of learning using your own experiences

* Recognised the importance of active listening & reflection

Katharine introduced it; Kevin told the story and did some explanation, then everyone thought of, recounted, listened and observed a story in turn.  Michael drew it to an end (well, the onset of 3:30 drew it to a close, actually), so there wasn't any written conclusions, just what people took away in their heads....
